My friends and I have always wondered why other girls out there display themselves with different clothes. I mean, we’re still young ladies who had no idea how the modeling world works.
Until I had the chance to live with my aunt, who was into fashion and a model for an agency, she was pretty and had nice body contours; I could only admire how she brings herself every time she dresses up.
When I had the chance to go to my aunt’s event, I knew that it was something worth remembering. So I sat at the sides, and there was this long aisle where models will be walking down with their dresses on. I waited for the moment when the models will be coming out.
When the event started, model after another model came out and walked with pride, but I saw my aunt with her gorgeous dress. I instantly thought of “me” being there, and at that very moment, it hit me.
A fashion designer intends to highlight their new apparel and accessories collection during Fashion Week. Runway shows debut every season, particularly Spring / Summer and Fall / Winter seasons.
Fashion shows are all about art, publicity, and clothing. It is also a way to create awareness among the public of new arrivals in design and style.
This article lets us explore more about the fashion runway and how important it is to the community.
So let us go ahead and walk down the red carpet this time!

What is the point of runway fashion?
Most fashion shows’ original and central aim is industry visibility and high fashion — customer base. Although collections had impressive or noteworthy moments before they became rapidly famous, a manufacturer sending their garments down the runway made a sales pitch.
Although collections had impressive or noteworthy moments before becoming explosively famous, a designer sending their clothes down the runway made many viewers impression. Retail customers make notes about what they would be interested in buying, depending on whether they think it would sell.
Similarly, fashion editors notice which pieces are likely to receive positive market reviews. Buyers and editors may also do their best in the season to get ideas for a coherent story/sales presentation on popular themes through various collections.
For couture houses, frequently showing one of a kind handmade items, affluent clients might also be in the crowd, ready to suggest after the show on which items they were willing to spend thousands of dollars.
Why is runway fashion so weird?
When we say weird, it would be supernatural or not the usual way of doing things. I do things differently when I think of a solution to finish my work; I also have a weird way of analyzing things to get me to the answer I need.
So when we say fashion is odd, it is maybe the thought of “This is Unwearable.”
There are explanations why some of the items on the runway look so odd (and yes, you’re right, they’re impossible to wear). But the fashion world is so locked, so hidden for outsiders to guess why!
Fashion is an emerging beast with the world’s fashionistas constantly striving to create stunning, unique new clothes for fashion shows. A common feature of such outfits is that they often appear impractical, unmanageable, and hilariously weird to the general reader.
So why don’t runway shows show off clothes people would like to wear, rather than go for outlandish outfits?
Such shows are often noted as a testing ground for designers to show off their talents by showing the extremes of what can be created with individual materials and fabrics.
It must also be known that while clothes seen on catwalks throughout high fashion shows are usually never intended for sale, they also somehow inspire fashion. Such factors can be as subtle as the color scheme displayed during a particular show or the simple clothing silhouette on display.
One good example is the skinny jeans fashion, which was first seen in the catwalk and mocked to be ugly. Now it is becoming the “must” clothing item of the following season and now relatively commonplace.
How do you walk down a fashion runway?
This is something that I laughed when I was still in college and never really had an idea of what fashion is. Every time I hear the catwalk, a different image comes into mind. I thought of a cat walking down the aisle wearing some clothes. Well, it didn’t take too long for me to realize what it was.
Walking like that of a catwalk model is easy to start, but perfecting is an art. But don’t worry, training is half the fun! Find out how to focus on your heels walking style, holding one foot in front of another. First, learn how to keep your facial expression balanced and poised. And eventually, work with pace and trust into your strut.
Here are the steps to perfect the walk in a Fashion Runway to further learn more about the catwalk.
- Place your head slightly down – Don’t drop or lower your head; behave as if you have an invisible cord tied to the top of the head holding you up, and then you’ll be on the catwalk above the crowd, placing your chin slightly down will let the crowd see much more of your face. Consequently, having your head slightly angled will bring your face angle and help give you some attitude.
- Don’t grin, close your lips instinctively locked – You don’t want to detract from your smile wearing clothing. Look around the room and try to keep your mouth usually to see how it feels. Tell someone else about the facial expressions. Some people sometimes see things you don’t see.
- Hang your arms on your sides and relax your hands – You don’t have to swing your arms as much as your body can. Hang your arms and turn gently. This should help you look cool when you walk the catwalk. Similarly, keep your hands loosely cupped and partially open. Also, don’t keep your fingers too tight.
- Practice walking on your shoes – No catwalk move is full without a tall heel pair. But if you’re not doing high-heels walking, it may take some to get used to it. Put on your morning heels as you get dressed. Strut to get used to looking like a model while walking in high heels.
- Get a rhythm down and stick to your move – Listen to music with a powerful beat that has an attitude you like when you’re strutting on your heels. Try to focus on the appearance you want to project, and retain the look as long as you walk. If you can give your step rhythm and attitude, your walk will come to life and exude an incredible supermodel energy.
- Strike the pose – when you hit the end of the stroll, wait for a beat, and lean on one hip with all your confidence and poise. You can now look down and break your concentration for a moment. You wouldn’t have to move your head. Your look should come mostly from your eyes. Compose and walk with the same facial expression as before, and walk off stage.
- Walk like a catwalk predator – There are a few iconic supermodel walks, and Karlie Kloss’s one is famous for its style predator. Make the walk down the runway quicker by having the knees up slightly higher than usual and keeping one foot ahead of the other. It should make your walk a jaunty move. Put more sway in your hips because it’s quicker. Your arms swing more from side to side. Gently shift the body’s rotation back and forth as you walk down the catwalk.
- Strut down attitude – Pump the legs up and down the catwalk with purpose and confidence. Let your body bounce as you walk. Your shoulders should shift subtly as you walk. Since you have more movement, you’ll swing your hips. However, let your hands bounce and drift back and forth with your walk. Hold your head turned to one side and shift gently with your shoulders as you walk.
If you want to walk the path in being a model runway, this kind of walk is a must to learn.
How long is a fashion show runway?
Usually, fashion shows the last 5-20 minutes everywhere.
Any fashion show’s duration depends on a few factors, including the number of looks a designer presents and the degree of the pageantry and display being served.
Another key factor to the duration of a runway show is if it starts on time. They never do in my aunt’s experience.
Why? Ok, first of all, seating fashion show attendees is like herding cats. People will catch up with friends (or opponents) they haven’t seen in a long time, trying to find a seat that’s better than the standing room allocation they’ve got, or just generally trying to be seen.
Also, some logistical nightmares could happen backstage. A model is late as they had to walk (or stand in a presentation) somewhere. Video, audio, or lighting is going wrong; hair and makeup are still in progress.
Why do models never smile?
A model in a catwalk show hasn’t personally selected the clothes – in a way, and their composure stands for the designers. They must look unconcerned, unshakeable, able to move effortlessly, and assert good control over hands and facial muscles as they pull off a trick of trust on the designer’s behalf.
They should not exude personality, which would be unacceptable because it may detract from the garments, and indeed the personality of the designer as represented by those garments. After all, they’re “model.” Nor do they seek acceptance, which implies a lack of confidence about what is actually ‘correct.’
A model required to navigate the room in something that theoretically makes them feel stupid must have an aspect of personal dignity at stake, but the designer is on trial. In something outlandish, the designer’s slip might interpret a smiling model as embarrassed or amused. If the set explodes, Whoever’s House loses not only face but fortune.
So the models can’t smile. Whatever else happens in their hearts, they have to place their lips on unearthly disapproving and unbending confidence – and just hope they don’t go over.
Why do models look so weird?
Runway pieces are like muses; they make the foundation on which the actual collection can depend. These exaggerated pieces also make it easier for us to grasp the true inspirations behind the set. They’re often used to add subtly fresh hints of what the designer wants to do for upcoming seasons.
After the exhibition, an idea could endure and be included in future collections if the audience liked it. Thus, there is another explanation of why fashion shows are so weird-looking: they showcase many design concepts to direct them and set future collections standards.
They’re also a way for designers to show the public their creativity and technical skills. They affirm the designer’s status as a real artist and thus hold a very special reputation. All brands wanting to market their goods and runway shows are a perfect way to gain press attention and brand recognition.
Featuring unbelievable pieces is a great way to help the brand create its reputation and aesthetics and become more known and famous.
All these amazing pieces are also used to inspire other artists and designers. In a way, they set the groundwork for future trends, and five years later, you may casually see some of their features.
Ultimately, it’s always worth looking at them and worrying about what they say and what they’re forecasting the apparel industry’s future.

Opening and or not opening a fashion show goes both ways if you ask me. Organizing such a big event would cost a lot. Since you will have to pay a lot of people for that matter. If you are wondering what those would be, here it is:
- Venue
- Inside The Venue
- Hair and Makeup
- Additional Staff
- Models
- Invitations
And the list can go on. These are just the most common things you will have to take care of. So, if you have an additional zero’s on your bank and you think you can sustain it. Go for it! Unless otherwise, I advise you to keep that as a dream.
